The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon that stretches east of Portland covering the river, waterfalls and the Historic Columbia River Highway.  It is under an hour's drive and was the first place I went hiking within a week's arrival in Portland back in 2011.
Nearby is Mount Defiance, Mount Hood, Multnomah Falls, the Vista House at Crown Point, Bonneville Dam and so much stunning scenery.  An unending wonderland for me to continue to explore.
